My First Stock Market Experience - 2008 American Airlines
I painted a fence one summer for my grandpa, my dads dad ( who you will read later on, was my favorite person on earth next to my dad, ill share the poem I wrote for his funeral ). Anyway, he said "I will pay you $100 or we can buy you some stock". I am a gambler, so I said STOCK PLEASE! We ended up buying American Airlines after it had tanked, maybe gone bankrupt or something ( I can't remember exactly). Anyway.. I think it was around .50 cents a share at the time, so we bought me like 200 shares to equal out to my fence painting -- which he then went on to say I did a shitty job, and him and my gma half assed the rest of it.
The price went up and up and up over the months.. my dad kept saying SELL every time it went up. $100 quickly turned into $1000, $2000, $3000, $4000... and eventually I sold it back to my grandpa ( since it was in his account ) at $8,000!
I remember I got up one morning and it was stressing me out so bad holding it this long, I called my grandpa and said let's sell. He said well I think it'll keep going up, so I am going to just pay you and I will keep it ( sweet tax free for me ). Come to find out, I ended up selling it at about the highest it had gotten then for the next year.. literally pennies off. I can remember my grandpa always joked and said "how did you know when to sell?.. " and my answer always the same, I just had a feeling and was done stressing!
Being the country girl I was at the time, I went out with my $8,000 and spent $6k on a new honda 450R sport quad. #winning -- Rolled this thing multiple times, no helmet like an absolute f'n idiot. So happy I am alive and well today.
